HORSEHEADS, N.Y.- For the third time this season, the Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team took the ice against New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) rival Elmira, with this meeting coming underneath the domes of the Murray Athletic Center. This marks the Cadets' first visit to Elmira since last season's NEHC Championship game.
Four and a half minutes into the contest, Norwich went on the first power play of the game. An opportunity where they got their first two shots of the game against Elmira's Chloe Beaubien. Despite the early power play not yielding a goal, it gave the Cadets momentum with Beaubien answering the call. Nine minutes into the period, the Soaring Eagles got some momentum going of their own tallying nine consecutive shots on goal of their own late in the period, none finding their way by
Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.). With 15 seconds left in the frame, and the Cadets caught on their heels, Norwich would go to the penalty kill to start the second period where Elmira held a 14-7 shot advantage at the break in the scoreless affair.
The remaining 1:45 of the penalty was killed off early in the second, and the Soaring Eagles kept pressing afterwards with Clark making numerous big saves. Just before the halfway mark of the period, Norwich would go back to the power play, which generated a goal 19 seconds into the advantage. Off the faceoff win, the puck was kept alive at the left point by
Aimee Headland (Nottingham, U.K.). From there, a board battle would ensue where
Taylor Girouard (Burlington, Mass.) poked the puck loose and got it to
Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.). Brooks sent a cross ice pass to
Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.) whose first chance was stopped by Beaubien, but she collected her own rebound and found the back of the net. The two teams would exchange power plays for the rest of the frame, but the Cadets would take their one goal lead to the break despite a 29-15 Elmira shot advantage.
Sensing the urgency, Elmira came out on fire in the third period tallying seven consecutive shots, before breaking through and tying the game after Claire Meeder took the puck off the stick of a Norwich attacker, rush into the attacking zone and put a wrist shock by Clark's blocker to even the score. After the equalizer, the Soaring Eagles kept pressing, but Clark kept the game tied heading into overtime. After Norwich won the initial faceoff, the Soaring Eagles kept pressing, but Clark denied them each time, preserving the 1-1 tie in a sensational 44 save performance.
"It's always a tough matchup against Elmira," said Head Coach
Sophie Leclerc Doherty. "Both teams competed hard, and we were fortunate to have Leo in net, she was tremendous."
The final stop on the four-game road trip for the Cadets is in Geneva, N.Y. on Jan. 13 where they will take on William Smith at 3 P.M.
