GENEVA, N.Y.- The Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team looked to round out their road trip by getting back on the winning track when they stopped by The Cooler to take on William Smith for the second time this season.
Looking to respond after the draw the night before, the Cadets pressed the attack early and often tallying six of the first seven shots. Herons' goaltender Erin Murray made those six saves, but the seventh one broke the ice just before the twelve-minute mark with
Madison Anderson (Green Bay Wis.) cleaning up a rebound of a
Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass) shot, with
Lauren Tuzik (Frankfort, Ill.) picking up the secondary helper. After the two sides traded chances, the Cadets would get a powerplay opportunity which was killed off by the Herons, during which there were coincidental minors which did not result in loss of player presence. Â
After a brief press by William Smith to open the second period, Norwich regained their territorial edge. However, after an opportunity was denied by Murray, the Herons attacked the other way tying the game courtesy of Elizabeth MacMurray with five and a half minutes remaining in the frame. Soon after, in the last minute, Brooks would find the back of the net with help from
Jillian Jackson (Fredericton, N.B.) and
Sihyun Kang (Paju-Si, Korea) which kept Norwich ahead after 40 minutes.
Early in the third, the Herons began to press looking to tie the game, with
Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) coming up with several big stops. Eventually, the Herons would get a flurry of opportunities and Lauren Legler would collect her own rebound and retie the game six and a half minutes into the third. Soon after, the Cadets responded just passed the halfway point of the frame with Brooks's second goal, on which Kang and Anderson also picked up their second points of the afternoon. Five minutes later,
Aimee Headland (Nottingham, U.K.) would pot her own rebound to extend Norwich's lead to two with
Taylor Girouard (Burlington, Mass.) notching the lone assist.
"We earned this win tonight despite a relentless William Smith team," Head Coach
Sophie Leclerc Doherty said. "We executed the details and had second effort plays from everyone. Leo came up big for us on several occasions. We are looking forward to quickly reset and get ready to compete again on Tuesday."
Tuesday's game will be a return to the Kreitzberg Arena ice for the eighth ranked Cadets, where they will host third ranked Amherst at 6 PM.
