Women's Soccer: Blazers Dash by Cadets on Two Early Goals

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Norwich Women's Soccer team fell in their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) 2-1 to Elms Wednesday night at Leary Field.

Out of the gate, the Blazers came out swinging eventually scoring their two goals in a span of 41 seconds. Firstly, in the ninth minute, Elms capitalized on a Cadet turnover where Emily Basua would break the ice. Soon after, a right footed kick from just inside the box by Kelly Malheiro extended the Blazer lead. Nine minutes later, Norwich would tally their first shot coming off the foot of Bella Roy (Weare, N.H.) from outside the penalty area and cutting the Elms lead in the half.

The Blazer onslaught continued in the second half as they accumulated 13 shots with seven on goal, however Rebecca Karis (Fayetteville, N.C.) kept the game close by not allowing anymore goals. All told, Karis made eight saves on the evening.

"We got off to a slow start tonight, but the team battled back and made it a tight game," Head Coach Jared Cipriano said. "I was proud of the team for not giving in after going down 2-0 early on. They showed a lot of toughness tonight and we'll look to build off of that for our game this weekend."

Up next for Norwich, they will continue to travel through Massachusetts over the weekend as they meet Emmanuel Saturday Sept 9 at 3 PM.
