Athletics: Norwich announces 2023 Hall of Fame Class

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee announced the inductees for Norwich University's Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2023 this week.

Nine individuals, as well as the 2012-13 women's rugby team, will be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 10:00 a.m. in Plumley Armory as part of the Homecoming Weekend festivities.

Kris Sabourin '13 - Sabourin is one of the most accomplished football players in program history.  A two-time ECFC Co-Offensive Player of the Year recipient, Sabourin holds the program records in passing touchdowns, total offense, and touchdowns responsible for, while remaining tied for first in yards per carry.  He also ranks second in pass attempts, pass completions, and pass yards, to additionally go with positions of fourth in rushing touchdowns and rushing attempts. He was a four-year starter at quarterback, reaching the postseason all four years while spearheading Norwich's first-ever NCAA playoff football team.

Emily Baugus '13 - Baugus distinguished herself both academically and athletically during her Norwich career, winning three national championships in women's rugby.  Baugus was captain on the 2012-13 women's rugby national championship team that is also being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year.  She graduated as the program's all-time leading scorer with 677 points.  Baugus ranks as the third-leading scorer all-time across both Norwich men's and women's rugby, and earned a total of 76 career caps on the pitch.

Jillayne DeBus '14 - DeBus was a critical piece to the women's hockey program's emergence as a national powerhouse.  A CCM East Region First Team All-American selection in 2012 and a Second Team All-American recipient in 2013, DeBus earned a pair ECAC First Team All-Conference nods and finished her career with 52 goals and 66 assists to finish with 118 points.  She was a member of the 2011 NCAA Div. III National Championship team, and was a part of three NCAA Tournament teams while at Norwich.  She helped lead the Cadets to three consecutive ECAC regular season titles and two ECAC Tournament titles.

Colin Mulvey '13 - Mulvey is one of the most decorated Norwich men's hockey players ever.  The 2013 recipient of the Joe Concannon Award (New England's best American-born player in Divisions II and III), Mulvey was also the NEWHA New England Division II-III Player of the Year and a CCM East Region First Team All-American selection the same year.  He concluded his time at Norwich with 43 goals and 35 assists for 78 career points, and was a part of the 2010 NCAA Div. III National Championship team, as well as three ECAC East Tournament Championship squads.

Ben Courtney '08 - Courtney was a dominant force in the pool, where he was a three-time New England champion in both the 50 and 100 back in 2004-05, 2006-07, and 2007-08.  He also logged himself in the Norwich record books, holding school records in the 50, 100, and 200 back, in addition to the 800 free relay.  He also set the pool record in the 400 free relay.

Jason Venne '98 - Venne was a national standout on the wrestling team, having been crowned New England Champion in 177 lbs in 1998 while also being named Outstanding Wrestler in New England the same year.  A four-time New England placer, Venne was also a three-time Academic All-American.  After Norwich, Venne served in the United States Army for nine years, where he received numerous accolades such as the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and Army Commendation Medal.

Joe Schwartz '93 - Schwartz garnered national attention as a linebacker for the football program, being named a First Team FFC Linebacker and a two-time preseason All-American.  A co-captain in 1992 and 1993, Schwartz also earned the team's Defensive MVP award those same two years, was named the NCAA Player of the Week twice, and was rated as one of the top three linebackers in the conference in 1992.

Mark Conroy '73 - Conroy is the Distinguished Letterwinner in this year's class, and was a four-year letterwinner in football.  A member of the 1970 Hall of Fame football team, Conroy was a co-captain his senior season, where he led the team in overall rushing yardage and combined rushing and receiving yardage.  He spent his entire career post-Norwich as a teacher, football coach, and athletic trainer, among other roles.  He was inducted into the Boston College High School Hall of Fame in 2008.

Dave Whaley '76 - This year's honorary inductee is Dave Whaley, the retiring Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff for President Mark Anarumo at Norwich.  A former rugby player, Whaley has championed the men's and women's rugby programs.  He has held numerous titles since becoming the Director of Alumni Affairs in 1981, including the Alumni Director and Director of Planned Giving to the Corporate Secretary.  Whaley will retire from Norwich University on June 30, 2023.

2012-13 Women's Rugby Team - The 2012-13 women's rugby team won the third national championship in program history to date.  The Cadets won the 2012 USA Rugby College 7s National Championship in Texas in December, defeating Sam Houston State, Ohio State, Stanford, Harvard, Texas, and Navy en route to the title.  They nearly claimed the 15s title months later, finishing as the USA Rugby Division I National Runners-up to Penn State.  Joya Clark '14 and Baylee Annis '14 were key pieces, with Clark being named USA Rugby 7s Championship MVP while Annis was a USA Rugby All-American.
