Baseball: Lasers Lock Down Cadets in GNAC Home Opener

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- In their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) home opener, the Norwich University Baseball team was defeated by conference leading Lasell in both ends of Sunday afternoon's doubleheader.

After the Lasers jumped out to an early lead, the Cadets responded by throwing up a five-spot in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) rocketed a bases clearing double to the right-center field gap to give Norwich the lead. Two batters later, Carpenter would come home by virtue of a Zeb Perrault (Chelsea, Vt.) two-run home run.

The lead did not last as Lasell answered with eight runs of their own in the fifth and took a four-run lead into the seventh. Early in the inning, Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.) cut the deficit to three with a solo home run. Eventually, the bases would be loaded for Perrault who drew a walk bringing Norwich to within two and placing the winning run on first. However, the Lasers wiggled out of trouble and prevailed 10-8.

Even though Lasell jumped out to an early two run lead in game two, the Cadets would tie the game by the third by bringing home Ryland Richardson (Windsor, Vt.) twice. The first time in the first on an RBI double by Roberge, the second on a Geffen Franus (Leesburgh, Va.) triple in the third. The Lasers would retake the lead in the fourth and not look back taking the second game 15-4.

On deck for the Cadets is a rematch with NVU-Lyndon on Apr. 18 at 3 PM in Lyndonville.
