Baseball: Franus, Miller, Callahan Shine as Cadets Split with Chargers

NEW LONDON, N.H.- The Norwich University Baseball team earned their first victory in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play when they split a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon against Colby-Sawyer.

The Cadets got to work right away in the first inning of the first game. Senior designated hitter PJ Morales (Bakersfield, Calif.) got things started with a leadoff single, one of three hits for Morales. He would swipe second base before Abel Oropeza (Whittier, Calif.) drove him home. The game remained a one run affair into the bottom of the fourth when the Chargers plated three runs to take the lead, but that was the only blemish on Ryan Miller's (Westhampton, N.Y.) outing only allowing three hits and two earned runs in six and a third innings of work.

Norwich drew within a run in the fifth, then erupted with three in the sixth to take the lead for good. The inning began with a leadoff double from Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.) and would advance to third on a wild pitch. After a Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) walk, Roberge would score the tying run on a fielder's choice. This put Carpenter into scoring position for Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.) who knocked him home with his second double of the game. Even though Franus was subbed out for a pinch runner that would prove to be the winning run that would come home on a Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.) double two batters later. Ben Emero (Medway, Mass.) nailed down the save as the Cadets prevailed 5-4.

Things took a different turn in the second game as Colby-Sawyer raced out to a six run lead by the conclusion of the second inning and would extend it to 10-2 by the end of the fourth. But, Norwich battled back to draw within three in the fifth including RBIs from Franus and Callahan. The Cadets would plate a run each in the sixth and eighth to cut the Charger lead to 11-9 but that was as close as Norwich would get to the lead.

After a month and a half traveling around, the Cadets will hold their home opener on April 13 at 3 PM against NVU-Lyndon.
