BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - Massachusetts Maritime Academy broke a 10-all deadlock and shut down a late Cadet rally, as the Norwich University men's lacrosse team suffered a 15-12 loss at Clean Harbors in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.
Coley Bagwell (York, Pa.) led the offense, netting four goals on five on-target shots. Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Md.) and Mitchell McKay (Lynnfield, Mass.) both logged hat tricks, while Duncan Youngclaus (Middleboro, Mass.) and Liam Conneely (Arlington, Mass.) added a goal apiece.
The Buccaneers got on the board early, courtesy of an unassisted tally from Ryan McDonough. McKay and Youngclaus handed the Cadets their first lead of the contest at 2-1 after the opening 15 minutes.
The second frame saw a flurry of goals, as Mass. Maritime and Norwich exchanged scores before Norwich took control with three-straight from Conneely, McKay, Bagwell. The Buccaneers responded before the halftime buzzer, threading two between the pipes to bring the Cadets' lead back down to one, 6-5.
The third stanza was much of the same, with 10 goals added between both teams, including four by the Buccaneers in the opening five minutes. The Cadets answered, with Bagwell tying things up at 10-all.
Mass. Maritime assumed control, adding one before the end of the third frame before pouring in four goals to open the fourth stanza. The Cadets attempted to rally in the waning seconds, with Seidel drilling in two to close the game.
McDonough set the tone for the Buccaneers, leading the way with five goals and two helpers.
The Cadets will close out their spring break trip on Friday, traveling to UMass Boston for a 4:00 p.m. tilt on Mar. 10.
