FORT PIERCE, Fla. – As they continue their spring break trip in the Sunshine State, the Norwich University Baseball team split their twin bill with Wilkes University on Wednesday.
Heading into the top of the sixth of game one, the Colonels held a 2-1 lead. The inning began with
Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) reaching on an error. After being sacrificed over to second,
Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.) drove Hayes in to even the contest. The following batter,
Geffen Franus (Leesburgh, Va.), gave the Cadets the lead with a double to center field plating Roberge. Soon after, Norwich would load the bases for
Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.) who drove home an insurance run on a sacrifice fly and the inning concluded with the Cadets ahead 5-2. Freshman
Will Fowler (Morrisville, Vt.) would record the final four outs for his second save of the campaign to lock down the 5-3 Norwich win.
The second game was a pitchers' duel between Hunter Lawall from Wilkes and
Jordan Talbot (Belchertown, Mass.). Both pitched the full seven innings, allowing one run apiece. The Cadets were down to their final out in the seventh before Callahan drove in the tying run sending the game to extra innings. The Colonels would score two in the eighth to put them ahead as Talbot finished the day pitching the full eight innings with ten strikeouts. Talbot also threw 108 pitches, 85 for strikes.
The Norwich Baseball team will round out their Florida trip Friday afternoon against Gallaudet University in Fort Pierce.
