FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Norwich University Baseball team rounded out their spring break trip through Florida with a doubleheader split with Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon at Fort Pierce's Lawnwood Complex.
Game one started off strong for the Cadets, as lefty starter
Matt Ingraffia (Lake Grove, N.Y.) faced the minimum number of Bison hitters in the top of the first. Norwich's offense complimented that effort on the bottom of the inning with a couple of runs, starting it off with a leadoff double by
Abel Oropeza (Whittier, Calif.). Two batters later, with runners on the corners and no outs, a
PJ Morales (Bakersfield, Calif.) double brought Oropeza home. The following hitter,
Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.), hit a sacrifice fly to bring home
Nolan Knight (Altona, N.Y.).
It would become a 3-2 game in favor of Norwich entering the bottom of the fourth, an inning in which the Cadets would plate four runs beginning with freshman
Jack Medhurst (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) reaching third on a three-base error. Two hitters later, Oropeza drove home Medhurst. Oropeza would get to third on a Morales single before Roberge drove home both runners on a double. The following batter,
Geffen Franus (Leesburgh, Va.), then doubled in Roberge to put the Cadets ahead 7-2. Gallaudet would fight back to tie the game in the sixth, but a sacrifice fly by Roberge in the bottom half of the inning gave the Cadets the 8-7 lead. A lead that remained after
Noah Carpenter (Herkimer, N.Y.) locked down the Bison and was credited with the win.
Gallaudet came out strong in game two scoring three runs in the second inning. Norwich would get on the board in the third with a
Zeb Perreault (Chelsea, Vt.) RBI single, but the Cadet offense was otherwise stymied by the Bison pitching staff only allowing four hits in a 5-1 Gallaudet win.
Norwich concludes their trip through the Sunshine State going 5-5 as they return to the northeast with a trip to Coast Guard for a doubleheader that gets underway at 1 PM on March 18.
