FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Norwich University Baseball team took home their first doubleheader sweep of the season Tuesday after noon against Monmouth College during their trip through Florida.
The Cadets were off and running early in the first game scoring six runs in the top of the first, which began with leadoff man
Ryland Richardson (Windsor, Vt.) reach first on a passed ball after striking out. After getting bunted over to second,
Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) singled Richardson home to put Norwich on the board. As the inning unfolded, the Cadets took advantage of passed balls by the Scots's catcher putting runners on second and third with one out before a two RBI single by
Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.).
Monmouth would eat into the lead, making it a 6-5 ballgame at the end of the second inning. The Cadet bullpen held down the fort until the conclusion of the first game only conceding one unearned run in five innings of work and carrying Norwich to a 7-6 win.
It took until the third inning of game two for runs to come home. To lead off the inning,
Kevin Ohlsen (Shirley, N.Y.) drew a four-pitch walk. The next batter, Richardson, reached base on an error while trying to bunt Ohlsen over. Another bunt would put runners on second and third with one out for Miller to hit a sacrifice fly to put Norwich ahead.
Abel Oropeza (Whittier, Calif.), the following hitter, singled in Richardson to extend the lead. In the fifth, Miller drove home
Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) after a leadoff double. Meanwhile, on the mound,
Noah Carpenter (Herkimer, N.Y.) recorded the final five outs for the save in a 3-2 Cadet victory.
Norwich will return to the diamond in Fort Pierce Wednesday morning with a doubleheader with Wilkes University at 10 AM.
