VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University Baseball team opened their weeklong stay in the sunshine state by splitting a doubleheader with Houghton University Saturday afternoon at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex.
The Cadets took home their first win of the season in Game One by a score of 9-8. Norwich plated six runs in the top of the second inning, highlighted by a three RBI double by junior
Owen Silk (North Haven, Conn.). Silk would score the sixth run of the inning on a double by
Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.) who finished the game going three for five. The Cadets extended their lead in the fifth by scoring three runs, two of which were driven in by
Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) on one of his three hits.
The Highlanders came on strong after that, scoring five runs in the fifth to cut the score to 9-6. In the bottom of the seventh, Houghton brought the winning run to the plate, but
Will Fowler (Morrisville, Vt.) shut the door earning the Cadets' first save of the season. Starting pitcher
Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) was stellar striking out seven batters in four innings.
The Cadets started game two strong with
Geffen Franus (Leesburgh, Va.) doubling in to runs in the bottom of the first. Eventually, the Highlanders would put the game out of reach by scoring 10 runs in the fourth.
Norwich's Florida trip continues tomorrow with a doubleheader tomorrow with Gettysburg College starting at 11 AM.
