Men's Ice Hockey: Nagle's OT Winner Lifts Cadets over Soaring Eagles

HORSEHEADS, N.Y.- The Norwich University Men's Ice Hockey team closed out their regular season on a high note with a 3-2 overtime victory over Elmira Saturday afternoon at Murray Athletic Center.

The Cadets held the upper hand early and their hard work paid off with a Johnny Johnson (Napierville, Ill.) goal to draw first blood. Norwich took the one goal lead into intermission along with a 16-7 shot advantage. The Cadets would keep their foot on the gas early in the second with Brady Gaudette (Braintree, Mass.) extending the lead with his second point of the game.

Two minutes later, the Soaring Eagles would cut the lead in half with a powerplay goal. In the final frame both sides traded chances with goaltenders Jeffery Zero and Drennen Atherton (Winter Haven, Fla.) standing tall. However, Elmira would tie the game late in the third sending the game to overtime. In the extra period Joe Nagle (Weymouth, Mass.) scored his second overtime winner of the season for the Cadets.

"I was very happy to close out the regular season with a win," said Head Coach Cam Ellsworth.

With the win, Norwich ends the regular season with an 18-5-2 overall record along with a 14-2-2 New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) record finishing as the second seed in the playoffs. Their Quarterfinal matchup will be against seventh seeded New England College Saturday February 18 at 7 PM at Kreitzberg Arena.
