Women's Basketball: Brewster nets 1,000th career point, explosive first half pushes Cadets past SUNY Delhi

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - History was made in the friendly confines of Andrews Hall, as Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) notched her 1,000th career point and the Norwich University women's basketball team coasted to a dominant 75-27 non-conference victory over SUNY Delhi on Tuesday night.

Brewster became the 19th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, finishing her night with 13 points to go with seven caroms, six helpers, and three steals.  Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) led the Cadets offensively, posting game-high marks of 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Sage MacAuley (Barre, Vt.) and Eleonore Collins (Waterville, N.Y.) had career nights, as both logged 10 points each off the bench on a combined 10-21 shooting clip.

Brewster wasted no time getting the show started, drilling a corner trey off the opening possession just 13 seconds in.  Yasmeen Kablaoui answered a minute later to knot the game up, but Norwich promptly answered on a McGinn layup, spurring a 27-2 run over the ensuing eight and a half minutes.  In that span, Brewster netted her 1,000th, picking off a pass from Rylee Falcone and driving coast-to-coast, forcing off pressure from Myles Matthias and laying up a shot off the window that rolled in off the rim.  Brewster and Siobhan O'Donnell (Glendale, N.Y.) finished off the first quarter in the waning seconds, securing a 25-point lead at the end of the frame.

The Cadets never relinquished momentum in the second, kicking things off on a 16-0 run that was capped off by a MacAuley layup six and a half minutes into the stanza.  The Broncos found some life in the closing minutes, cracking into double-digits, but Norwich's offense continued to roll, taking an insurmountable 50-12 lead into the break.

While Norwich's offense cooled in the second half, SUNY Delhi could not find an answer for the Cadets' stifling defense.  The Cadets outscored the Broncos, 25-15, in the third and fourth quarters, gradually building their largest lead of 48 behind a game-ending 8-0 run, which was completed by baskets from MacAuley and Collins that pushed the duo into double-digit territory.

Norwich controlled every offensive category, maintaining advantages in points off turnovers (27-7), points in the paint (56-12), second chance points (23-2), fast break points (16-2), and bench points (35-6).  The Cadets forced 25 Bronco turnovers, while limiting SUNY Delhi to a 20.4% mark from the floor.  The Cadets were blistering from the floor, thanks to a 56.5% clip in the first quarter.

Brewster, meanwhile, becomes the first women's basketball player to join the 1,000 point club since Shyann Josler '18 earned her 1,000th career point on Feb. 6, 2018.  Brewster will now move forward with 1,004 points, one shy of Norwich Hall of Famer Hope Allen '00 for 18th on the all-time leaderboard.  Brewster, a junior, netted her 1,000th point in just 55 games.

The Cadets will ride their three-game winning streak into this weekend's 2023 Ed Hockenbury Classic, which kicks off on Friday, Dec. 1, when Norwich battles Fisher College at 5:00 p.m.  Hamilton College and the University of Maine at Fort Kent will close the night at 7:00 p.m.  Saturday, Dec. 2, will see Hamilton and Fisher duel at 1:00 p.m., followed by Norwich and the University of Maine at Fort Kent closing out the women's portion of the Classic at 3:00 p.m.  More information on the Hockenbury Classic is available here, with more to come in the coming days.
