Women's Basketball: Cadets soar past Falcons behind double-digit triage in Hockenbury Classic

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's basketball team extended its dominant winning streak to four, coasting to an 85-31 victory over Fisher College in the opening game of the 2023 Ed Hockenbury Classic on Friday evening in Andrews Hall.

Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) poured in a game-high 31 points, going 12-22 from the floor with six treys, to go with seven caroms and five helpers.  Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) posted 21 points inside on an automatic 10-15 clip, while Silas Bernier (Jaffrey, N.H.) handed out six assists and finished 5-7 on field goals for 11 points, while snagging four steals.

The Falcons opened the contest on an Ariana Ramos-Cardona to secure their first and only lead of the evening, as the Cadets' offense exploded behind a 12-0 run.  Fisher remained within striking distance at the tail-end of the first frame and into the second quarter, whittling Norwich's lead down to 15 at one point, 24-9, at the 5:52 mark.

It was all Norwich from there, however, as the Cadets embarked on an inane 27-0 run over the ensuing 10 minutes in the second and third quarters to build a 42-point lead.  A pair of Eleonore Collins (Waterville, N.Y.) freebies at the end of the third would grant the Cadets a 44-point lead.

Norwich burst through the 50-point mark behind a three-pointer from Kiley O'Brien (Kingston, Mass.) and a lay-up from McGinn, eventually taking a game-high lead of 55 late in the stanza on another McGinn layup.  Erika Thomas (Burlington, N.C.) iced the game on free-throws down the stretch to end Norwich's offensive onslaught.

The Cadets dominant in every statistical category, including points off turnovers (45-14), second chance points (12-7), bench points (13-0), points in the paint (48-8), and fast break points (25-4).

In the nightcap of the opening day of the Hockenbury Classic, Hamilton College captured a 73-50 victory over the University of Maine at Fort Kent.  Kendall Harris paced the Continentals with 22 points, while the Bengals' Skye Dugan poured in 25 points in the loss.

The Cadets will battle the University of Maine at Fort Kent at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, to close out the women's portion of the Hockenbury Classic.  Hamilton and Fisher will duke it out prior to that game at 1:00 p.m.
