NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's basketball team corralled their second win in as many days, this time trouncing intrastate foe Vermont State University Lyndon, 64-47, in a non-conference match-up in Andrews Hall on Saturday afternoon.
The Cadets opened the afternoon on a
Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.), setting the tone for what would be a dominant showing for the post. While the Hornets captured the lead on their ensuing 6-0 run, Norwich rallied behind a late-quarter onslaught, embarking on a 14-4 run behind baskets from McGinn and
Sage MacAuley (Barre, Vt.) to take a six-point lead into the second frame.
Norwich did not look back, thanks to back-to-back treys from
Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the midst of eight-straight points by the junior. A pair of baskets from McGinn immediately after gave the Cadets their largest lead of the first half at 16, 28-12. The Hornets whittled Norwich's lead back down to single-digits heading into the break, but MacAuley and Brewster pushed the Cadets back ahead to double-figures to kick off the third quarter.
Lyndon's offensive rhythm went stagnant in the fourth, as Norwich bolstered the lead via McGinn and
Erika Thomas (Burlington, N.C.) drives through the lane and swift jumpers from MacAuley and Brewster. Brewster and Thomas iced the game on freebies, ending the game on eight-straight free-throws to capture the 17-point win.
Brewster strung together a dominant 30-point showing to lead all scorers, while McGinn posted 18 points in 20 minutes of action. MacAuley flirted with a near double-double in her collegiate debut, logging eight points and nine caroms off the bench.
The Cadets owned a 24-21 edge in points off turnovers, but primarily thrived in points in the paint, maintaining a 34-18 advantage inside.
Norwich will take time away from the hardwood before returning to action on Tuesday, Nov. 28, hosting SUNY-Delhi in Andrews Hall at 7:30 p.m. The Cadets will then host the 2023 Ed Hockenbury Classic, taking on Fisher College and the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2, respectively, in a predetermined field that also includes Hamilton College.
