NEW LONDON, Conn.- The Norwich Men's Soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to six games Wednesday afternoon when they traveled down to Mitchell College coming away with a 3-0 shutout victory.
The Cadets had the Mariners on their heels early as they generated the first nine shots of the game, with Mitchell goalkeeper Jesse Jenkins making four saves in the first 28 minutes. Norwich would eventually break through in the 29
th minute, freshman
Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) took a free kick sending the ball to the net mouth where
Kam Jorgenson (Titusville, Fla.) was waiting. He would bury it to break the ice. The Mariners tallied their first shot in the 31
st minute, their only shot on goal of the half as Norwich held a 12-3 total shot advantage at the break.
Out of the intermission, the Cadets kept up the offensive pressure. In the 58
th minute, Jorgenson got a step on Mariner defender Dylan Lucey, who hauled him to the turf by the scruff of his neck, drawing a red card which put Mitchell down to ten players. On the ensuing free kick,
Cullen Swett (Williston, Vt.) sent the ball from the top of the box to the back of the net for his fourth goal in the last three games. 1:17 later, Fuentes and
Aidan Dwyer (Glastonbury, Conn.) connected on a give-and-go play with Fuentes setting the table for Dwyer to put Norwich ahead by three. By the time the final whistle blew, the Cadets would rack up 25 total shots to the Mariners' seven.
"It was a much needed three points on the road today," said Head Coach
Staige Davis. "The team played really well after the long trip and deserved all the goals they scored."
Norwich will look to keep their unbeaten streak alive when they travel to Lasell on Oct 14 for a noon kickoff against the Lasers. Â
