Men's Soccer: Second Half Onslaught Burns Lasers

NEWTON, Mass.- The Norwich Men's Soccer team stretched their unbeaten streak within Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Lasell.

The Cadets had the Lasers on their heels early and jumped in front in the 17th minute. Freshman Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) took his second of five corner kick of the game to that point, while the first attempt was nullified, Norwich kept the play alive with Fuentes finding Jami Lashua (Williston, Vt.) streaking to the goal to break the ice. The score would hold at 1-0 at halftime.

Twenty minutes into the second half, Norwich would pot two goals in 2:36. In the 65th minute, Fuentes fell to the ground while being pursued by three Laser defenders. But he found a way to get the ball to Nathan Statires (Hampton, N.H.) who doubled the Norwich lead. For the second marker of the half, Lashua would win a foot race with the defender and feed a centering pass to Brice Eka (Gaithersburg, Md.) bumping the Norwich lead to three. The shutout did not last as Lasell got on the scoreboard in the 86th minute.

"The team adapted well to the grassy field as opposed to the turf," said Head Coach Staige Davis. "Lasell is always a tough fixture and I'm really proud of the boys and happy to see some new names on the scoresheet."

Up next, the Cadets will return to Sabine Field where they will take on New England College Tuesday night at 7 PM.
