BOSTON – As they continue their long road swing, the Norwich University Women's Ice Hockey team tied UMass Boston 4-4 Friday night at Barry Rink.
Out of the gate, the Cadets held the upper hand in possession. However, the Beacons would jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Later on in the period, senior
Mikah Baptiste (Ottawa, On.) would make it a one goal game with the team's first shorthanded goal of the season.
Norwich would even the game up 26 seconds into the second period courtesy of
Taylor Girouard (Burlington, Mass.). On that goal senior
Ann-Frederique Guay (St-Lambert-de-Lauzon, Que.) notched her second assist of the game making Guay the 13
th player in program history to reach the century mark.
"I couldn't be happier for Ann-Fred and her 100-point milestone," Head Coach Sophie Leclerc said. "She is the total package- a tremendous talent on the ice, a leader by example, and an even better person. It's only a small reflection of the impact she's had and will continue to make on our program."
Later in the period Girouard would score again giving the Cadets their first lead of the night. But before the period concluded, UMass Boston would regain the lead at 4-3.
Norwich pressed hard in the third period outshooting the Beacons 16-2 in an attempt to force overtime. With 25 seconds remaining in regulation Guay would bury one on a net mouth scramble to tie things up. Overtime would go scoreless despite the Cadets tallying all seven shots in the extra frame.
"Tonight, was a back-and-forth game that could have gone either way," Leclerc said. "I'm proud of our group for not letting an early deficit dictate the rest of the game and have a lot of positives to reflect on."
The next stop for Norwich on their road swing is a visit to Johnson & Wales set for 4 PM Saturday afternoon.
