NEW LONDON, NH- The Norwich University Volleyball team continues its march to the postseason as they defeated Colby-Sawyer 3-1 Wednesday night at Hogan Sports Center.
The opening frame was rough for the Chargers. Despite both team having the same amount of kills Colby-Sawyer was charged with eight errors which gave the Cadets the advantage throughout the set taking it 25-29.
It was more of the same in the second set which Norwich took 25-14 behind strong efforts by junior
Leah Matthewson (North Chelmsford, Mass.) and
Abby Kanaga (Apopka, Fla.). Kanaga would finish the game with the second most kills on the team (11) and Matthewson would finish third (10).
The Chargers came on strong in the third set as they looked to mount a comeback led by senior
Olivia Werner (Williston, Vt.) who finished with a game high 15 kills. It was a battle to the bitter end until senior
Ameesah Cotten (Newburg, N.Y.) finished things off to give Colby-Sawyer the 32-30 set victory.
In the final frame the Cadets jumped out to an early lead which at one point was 23-11 but the Chargers would not go away. They would get the score to 23-20 before an attack error, followed by a game clinching kill by
Maggie McNeil (Gilford, N.H.). Â McNeil also tied
Laura Farnum (
North Andover, Mass) for the team lead in aces with four.
The Cadets will look to cement a spot in the GNAC playoffs when they host a tri match with Anna Maria and Regis at Andrews Hall. The first game is scheduled for 11 AM. Â
