Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's basketball team used high efficiency shooting to down the Monks of Saint Joseph's College Saturday afternoon in the Harold Alfond Center, 85-75.
The Cadets shot an efficient 54 percent from the field going 34-for-63. Kyle Booth (Northfield, Vt.) powered the Cadets to victory shooting 8-of-13 from the field for a total of 19 points. Donovan Lewis Jr. (Savannah, Ga.) went 5-for-5 in the second half scoring 11 of his 13 total points, while bringing in a team-high six rebounds in the game.
Rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Cadets, Samuel-Noah Osarenkhoe (Stockholm, Sweden) added 14 points and Jaydon Cousin (Savannah, Ga.) added 10 points off the bench.
After Osarenkhoe opened the scoring for Norwich with a three-pointer on the Cadets first shot attempt of the game, Griffin Foley evened things up with a three-pointer of his own. Spencer Conatser (Reno, Nev.) hit a three, that was followed up by a layup by Jalen Olivero (Holyoke, Mass.) to take an 8-3 lead early in the first half.
After Foley made a layup to cut the Cadet lead down to four, Norwich scored seven straight points to take an 11-point lead.
With 3:48 remaining the Monks' Nicholas Curtis hit a three-point jumper to cut the Cadet lead down to five. Curtis then followed up with a layup before teammate Julian Llopiz hit a three-pointer to even the score at 34-34. With 53 seconds remaining in the first half, Foley found his way around the basket for a layup, giving Saint Joseph's their first lead of the game. Olivero hit a layup on the other side of the court, to go into the half knotted up at 36-36.
The Monks jumped out to a 45-37 lead in the opening 1:13 of the contest, before Norwich started to cut into the lead, with a pair of Lewis Jr. layups. Curtis added a pair for the Monks, but Conatser hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to three. Shortly after Booth was fouled on a layup attempt, but was able to convert despite the contact and then made his attempt at the line to complete the three-point play and tied the game.
With 13:57 remaining in the game and the Cadets up by three, Kohlby Murray (Fair Haven, Vt.) took a three-point jumper that fell and gave the Cadets a six-point advantage that they would maintain the rest of the contest.
The Cadets will next play on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. against Emmanuel in Andrews Hall. They will then travel down to New Haven, Conn. on Saturday, Jan. 22 for a 3 p.m. matchup against Albertus Magnus.
