Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Junior Joseph Thongsythavong (Salem, Mass.) scored on a header in the 91st minute to lift the Norwich University men's soccer team to a huge 1-0 victory over defending Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) champion Johnson & Wales on Friday night on Sabine Field.
Norwich (4-2, 2-1 GNAC) also handed JWU (5-1, 2-1 GNAC) its first loss of the season and picked up a crucial three points in the GNAC standings.
Thongsythavong was the first player to get a head on a beautiful corner kick service from the left by senior Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.). Thongsythavong's header from the far post was headed back towards the right post and JWU goalkeeper Jacob Friedman got a fingertip on the ball, but not enough to deflect the ball away from the net and it bounced in to send the home crowd into a frenzy.
Norwich outshot JWU 15-12 in the game and earned six corner kicks to the Wildcats' one.
Norwich junior goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) made three saves to earn his eighth career shutout.
Norwich will continue its home stand, hosting Dean College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in another GNAC matchup.
