STANDISH, Maine – The Norwich University men's soccer team saw its historic postseason run come to a close Saturday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Saint Joseph's College of Maine in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship. While the Cadets came up short of their first conference title since 2008, Norwich capped a season of significant progress under Head Coach Rob Emmett, returning to the championship match for the first time since 2023 and making its third GNAC Championship appearance in the last five seasons.
The matchup marked the first meeting between Norwich and Saint Joseph's in the GNAC Championship since 2021, when the Monks claimed a 1-0 victory in double overtime. The Cadets looked to reverse that result and bring home the program's first conference championship in 18 years, but Saint Joseph's struck first in the 13th minute, taking a 1-0 lead.
Norwich continued to battle throughout the opening half, looking to find an equalizer and get back into the contest. The Monks added to their advantage in the 60th minute, scoring at 59:09 to make it a 2-0 game. The Cadets continued to push forward in search of a response, but Saint Joseph's held on through the final whistle to secure the conference championship.
Victor Kalorin (Raleigh, N.C.) was Norwich's starting goalkeeper and remained in goal throughout the contest as the Cadets looked to contain the Monks' attack. Norwich finished with 10 shots, putting eight on target, while earning six corner kicks. Saint Joseph's recorded 11 shots, nine of which were on goal. Kalorin finished the contest with 7 saves.
Despite the championship setback, Norwich's postseason journey represented another major step forward for a program that has steadily returned to the GNAC's upper tier under Emmett. Entering the tournament as the No. 7 seed, the Cadets faced a difficult path to the championship, beginning with a quarterfinal matchup on the road against No. 2 Albertus Magnus.
Norwich opened its tournament run on Oct. 31 with one of its most dramatic performances of the season, advancing past Albertus Magnus after a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes and a 7-6 victory in the penalty shootout. After the Falcons took the lead in the 41st minute, Cristian Habiniak (North Branford, Conn.) delivered the equalizer in the 63rd minute, finishing a setup from Daniel Hennessey (Dubai, U.A.E.) to bring the Cadets level.
With neither side able to find a winner through two overtime periods, the match moved to penalties. Norwich displayed composure from the spot, converting six of its first seven attempts. Miles Bergeson (Charlotte, Vt.), Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain), Hennessey, Ben Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Sharmarke Hassan (Burlington, Vt.), and Alessandro D'Arena (Berlin, Conn.) all converted their attempts before Alejandro Pena (Annapolis, Md.) stepped forward to deliver the decisive penalty after the teams traded misses in the seventh round. The victory sent Norwich into the GNAC Semifinals for the second consecutive season.
The Cadets carried that momentum into their semifinal matchup with Rivier on Nov. 4, earning a convincing 4-1 victory to punch their ticket to the conference championship. The win was particularly meaningful for Norwich, avenging a 1-0 semifinal loss from the 2025 postseason.
Bergeson opened the scoring in the 15th minute, rising to head home a corner kick from D'Arena. Norwich doubled its advantage in the 32nd minute when Harry Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) capitalized on a turnover to put the Cadets in control. Hennessey added another goal in the 58th minute, giving Norwich a 3-0 lead before Rivier answered less than two minutes later. Habiniak provided the final cushion in the 84th minute, securing the 4-1 result and Norwich's first GNAC Championship appearance since 2023.
The offensive production throughout the season was a defining characteristic of the Cadets' success. Norwich entered the championship with 42 goals through 19 games, averaging 2.21 goals per contest, while allowing just 19 goals. The attack featured contributions from throughout the lineup, with Fuentes and Hennessey leading the team with five goals and four assists apiece for 14 points. Brian Baek (Fairfax, Va.) also recorded five goals and two assists, while Habiniak finished the regular season with five goals and one assist. Bergeson added four goals and three assists, providing a consistent presence in the attack and delivering key moments during the postseason.
Kalorin was equally important to Norwich's success, entering the championship with 56 saves on the season and recording seven saves in each of the Cadets' two GNAC Tournament victories. His performances helped Norwich navigate two difficult postseason tests and reach the championship stage.
The 2026 campaign marked another milestone in Emmett's continued transformation of the Norwich men's soccer program. After reaching the GNAC Semifinals in consecutive seasons, the Cadets took another step forward by earning a place in the championship match and competing for the program's first conference title since 2008. The postseason run showcased the growth of the group, the depth of the roster, and the ability to deliver in high-pressure moments.
While the Cadets will depart Standish without the championship trophy, the future remains bright for Norwich men's soccer. The team is positioned to return all but one player next season, giving the program an experienced core with valuable postseason experience and another opportunity to build on the progress made in 2026. With the foundation established over the last three seasons, Norwich will look to carry its championship run into the next campaign and continue its climb toward the top of the GNAC.
