Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. – Norwich University men's basketball allowed Clarkson University to shoot over 50 percent from the floor and from beyond the arc in a 107-81 non-conference loss at Alumni Gym on Friday afternoon.
The Cadets fell to 0-5 on the season and will host the Golden Knights in the back end of the head-to-head matchup Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Clarkson improved to 4-3 on the season with the win.
Clarkson was hot from the perimeter, shooting 16-for-31 from beyond the three-point line with four players hitting two or more long-range shots led by Chris Hulbert's five and Joe Lucas's four.
The Knights got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 10-1 lead and then expanding the margin to 18-5 thanks to back-to-back treys from Jason Phelps. Garrett Delaney hit a triple midway through the half to push the lead to 16, but Norwich began getting to the basket and cutting into the deficit.
The Cadets scored nine points in less than two minutes around the midway point of the half to cut Clarkson's from 25-10 to a 27-19. Junior Donovan Lewis Jr. (Savannah, Ga.) had a pair of layups to start the rally, then junior Tayjaun McKenzie (Boston, Mass.) finished the run five-straight points.
A layup by senior Kyle Booth (Northfield, Vt.) at the 5:32 mark brought the Cadets to within six at 37-31, but seven-unanswered points immediately after Booth's bucket ballooned the hosts' lead back to 13 points which eventually settled at 10 at the break, 49-39.
At the start of the second half, Clarkson hit four quick three-pointers, with three coming from Lucas in the first four minutes. The Knights held at least a 16-point lead from the final 14 minutes on and cruised to a 26-point victory.
Hulbert led all scorers with 27 points, going 9-for-14 from the field, while Lucas scored 14 points in 21 minutes, shooting 5-for-9 from the floor. Phelps tossed in 14 on 5-for-7 shooting, while Reese Swedberg contributed a near double-double with 12 points and nine boards.
For Norwich, five players finished in double figures, led by Lewis Jr.'s 17 points. He also added 10 rebounds to secure his second double-double of the season. Booth knocked down 16 points on an efficient 6-for-9 shooting performance. Jesse Davis (Woodinville, Wash.) and McKenzie both knocked in 11 points while freshman Jarontez Garrett (Atlanta, Ga.) chipped in 10 points on 50 percent shooting.
