Men's Soccer: Norwich edges Univ. of St. Joseph, 3-2

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, VT. - Freshman Mamadi Jiana (Chicopee, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Norwich University men's soccer team to a crucial 3-2 win over Univ. of St. Joseph (Conn.) on Friday night to kickoff Parent and Family Weekend.

Norwich (7-2, 5-1 GNAC) won its fourth straight game and improved to 4-0 all-time against Univ. of St. Joseph. Junior Joseph Thongsythavong (Salem, Mass.) added a goal and an assist as he added to his team-leading goal total (11) and point total (27).

Norwich started the scoring exactly two minutes into the game with Jiana stealing a ball from a USJ defender and then speeding in on net before kicking the ball with the outside of his right foot to tuck the ball into the bottom right corner of the net and give the Cadets a 1-0 lead.

Thongsythavong stretched the lead to 2-0 at the 11:27 mark with a rebound goal after Andree Hernandez (Cancun, Mexico) ripped a shot that was saved by the USJ keeper. Thongsythavong was first to the rebound and fired the ball into an open net for his 11th goal of the year.

USJ (7-3-1, 4-3 GNAC) got a pair of goals from the NCAA Division III scoring leader DeAnte Anderson, including one in the 19th minute after Dane Stephens' initial shot was blocked by a NU defender's head and then the rebound dribbled over to the right where Anderson was waiting and he buried the ball into the back left corner of the net for his 16th goal of the season.

Jiana extended the Norwich lead to two goals again in the 30th minute, scoring off an assist from Thongsythavong to make it 3-1.

Anderson capped the scoring for the game in the 35th minute with an impressive individual effort to evade a trio of Norwich defenders before burying a shot in the bottom left corner of the net and past Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.).

Wagenseller finished five saves on the game, including a terrific game-saving stop with just over 10 minutes left to rob Stephens on the door step right a diving save to his right.

Norwich outshot USJ 24-13. Jose Miguel Garcia Martin made 10 saves in goal for USJ.

Norwich will travel to Colby-Sawyer on Sunday, Oct. 10 for a 1 p.m. GNAC matchup with the Chargers.
