NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's rugby team rallied from a 7-5 halftime deficit to defeat Boston University 29-17 on Saturday afternoon at the NU Dog River Rugby Pitch on Senior Day.
Norwich honored its 17 seniors prior to the start of the game. The Cadets received tries from Arthur Martinez (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Anthony Kowalski (Yamhill, Ore.), Patrick Gest (Greensboro, N.C.), Jacob Sherman (Gahanna, Ohio) and Jack Tellifson (Bow, N.H.) to win its fourth straight game. Junior captain Leo Clayburgh (Brussells, Belgium) went 2-for-5 on conversions.
Martinez, Gest and Tellifson were all seniors that scored in their final regular season home match at the Dog River Pitch.
Norwich (4-1, 4-0 NEWCRC) scored first at the 34:56 mark of the first half with Martinez plunging in for the try. Boston University (1-3, 1-3 NEWCRC) answered back though with a try on the final play of the first half by William Thompson. Carlos Lozano hit a long conversion into the wind to give the Terriers a 7-5 lead heading into the halftime break.
Kowalski scored early in the second half to give Norwich a 10-7 lead, however BU's Jay Tagliani scored shortly thereafter to give BU a 14-10 lead again. Gest scored in the 55th minute with a successful conversion from Clayburgh to give the Cadets a lead they would never relinquish at 17-14. Sherman broke through for a try and a successful conversion from Clayburgh in the 69th minute to make it 24-14.
BU made a penalty kick in the 75th minute to cut the deficit to 24-17. However, Tellifson punctuated the game with a try on the final play of the game to make it 29-17 at the full-time whistle.
Norwich will travel to Coast Guard next Saturday for a showdown with the Bears.
