DURHAM, N.H. – The Norwich University men's rugby team continued its strong run of form Saturday afternoon, rolling past the University of New Hampshire, 59-12, behind a nine-try performance on the road.
The Cadets struck first when junior scrumhalf Brandon Smith (Charlotte, N.C.) crossed the try line with a pick-and-go to give Norwich an early lead. Sophomore Aedan Kerr (Hillside, N.J.) added the conversion to make it 7-0.
Kerr extended the Cadets' advantage in the 27th minute, scoring a try of his own and converting to push Norwich ahead, 14-0. New Hampshire responded with an unconverted try, cutting the deficit to 14-5, where the score remained heading into halftime.
Following adjustments from head coach Carrick Pell, Norwich returned to the pitch with renewed energy in the second half. Assistant coach Austin Manhey emphasized the importance of the halftime changes, noting that the Cadets needed to return to their standard of play and adjust their approach to the Wildcats.
The Cadets wasted little time extending their lead after the break. Junior Dylan Hoey (Chappaqua, N.Y.) crossed the try line eight minutes into the second half, with Kerr adding the conversion to make it 21-5. Kerr followed with another try and conversion of his own, stretching the Norwich advantage to 28-5.
New Hampshire answered with a try in the 55th minute to make it 28-12, but the Wildcats would not score again.
Sophomores James Fagley (Vernon, Vt.) and Max Ansell (Red Bank, N.J.) each crossed the try line twice as Norwich's attack took control down the stretch. A penalty try further extended the Cadets' lead, while Kerr continued to contribute from the kicking tee as Norwich pulled away for the decisive 59-12 victory.
The win adds to Norwich's recent offensive success as the Cadets continue to build momentum under Pell. The team will look to carry that form into its next matchup, traveling to face Boston University in a showdown between two of the conference's top teams.
