NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University soccer team scored twice in the first half and then held on for the 2-1 victory over Albertus Magnus on Saturday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.

Norwich (10-2-1, 5-1-1 GNAC) received goals from Hunter Lortie (Manchester, N.H.) and Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.) as the Cadets won their fifth straight game and solidifed their hold on third place in the league standings.

Freshman goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) made five saves for the Cadets and nearly had his fourth clean sheet of the season, but Albertus Magnus (7-5-1, 4-2 GNAC) scored on a penalty kick with 2:02 remaining in the game to spoil the shutout bid. 

Nemeye opened the scoring just 2:27 into the game, scoring on a cross from the right by Matteo Iagrossi (Schenectady, N.Y.) to give the Cadets the early advantage. The goal was Nemeye's seventh of the season and his seventh in the last seven NU games. 

Lortie scored with 1:05 left in the first half, burying a shot off a cross from Julius Davis (Peabody, Mass.) to push the Cadets' lead to 2-0.

Salah Oumorou scored his league-leading 13th goal of the season on a penalty kick late in the game after Norwich's Nick Tantillo was whistled for a foul in the box.

The two teams combined for 31 fouls in a very contentious game with possession of third place in the league on the line.

Garfield Robinson made six saves for Albertus Magnus in the loss.

With the win, Norwich has now won at least 10 games in 14 straight seasons. 

The Cadets will travel to Johnson & Wales on Friday, October 18 in a huge showdown for second place in the GNAC standings.
