Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's soccer team downed Northern Vermont University at Lyndon on Saturday evening in non-conference action at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
Sophomore Nick Tantillo (Tolland, Conn.) scored on a header off a free kick from freshman Amerlin Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.) to give Norwich a 1-0 lead at the 8:47 mark of the first half that they would never look back from.
Matt Bento (Brookfield, Conn.), Nemeye, and a NVU-Lyndon own goal accounted for the second half scoring as Norwich pulled away for a 4-0 victory.
Bento scored on a nice combination piece after an initial shot by Alex Brannan (Oneonta, N.Y.) was saved by the NVU-Lyndon goalkeeper. Andre Rodriguez (Wallingford, Conn.) was the first to the ball though and fed a perfect pass to Bento who tapped it into a wide open net to make it 2-0 Cadets.
Just over eight minutes later Nemeye ripped a shot into the corner of the net from the top of the 18 off an assist from Bento.
Less than a minute later a shot redirected off a NVU-Lyndon player for an own goal to cap the scoring.
Norwich outshot NVU-Lyndon 38-3 for the game. Senior goalkeeper Brendan Germano (Monroe Township, N.J.) was untested in picking up the victory. NVU-Lyndon starting goalkeeper Caleb Derbyshire made 15 saves for the Hornets in goal.
Norwich (1-0-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) will travel to Middlebury on Tuesday for another non-conference matchup. The Cadets then return home to host Maine Maritime and SUNY Maritime the following weekend.
