Box Score 2 BANGOR, Maine - The Norwich University baseball team travelled to take on Husson University in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Cadets split with the Eagles as Husson won game one 3-1 and Norwich claimed the second contest 7-3.
In game one the Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and held that lead until the fifth inning. Husson scored twice more in that frame to stretch its lead to 3-0.
Norwich plated its lone run in the top of the seventh inning as freshman second baseman Christopher Dayos scored on a passed ball to make it 3-1.
The Cadets could only muster three hits in the game but got a strong outing from senior starter Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) who kept the game close.
Whaley tossed six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks. He fanned six batters and falls to 1-3 on the season.
Game two was a different story for the Cadet offense even though Norwich trailed 1-0 entering the top of the third inning. Sophomore outfielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) delivered an RBI single that scored senior third baseman Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) (who reached base on an error) to tie the game.
The Eagles reclaimed the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth but the Cadet bats were awoken in the final three innings. Sirois ledoff the top of the fifth with a solo home run, his first of the season, to knot the game at 2-2.
Lynch then hit an infield single and stole second base before sophomore Matt Paze (Carlisle, Mass.) drew a walk. Junior DH Leland Goodenough (Brookfield, Vt.) knocked a two-run double to left centerfield to score Lynch and Paze and give the Cadets a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the sixth junior Eddie Gates (Griswold, Conn.) ripped a two-out, two-run double down the left field line to score fellow junior Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) and Sirois and stretch the lead to 6-2.
Senior catcher Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.) launched a pinch-hit, solo homer of his own in the top of the seventh inning to make it a 7-2 game, but Husson rallied for one run in the bottom of the inning for a 7-3 final score.
Senior Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.) picked up the win for the Cadets after throwing four and 1/3 innings and giving up two earned runs on seven hits and four walks. He struck out four batters and improves to 2-2 on the season.
Norwich now stands at 4-10 on the season. The Cadets are next in action on Sunday, March 26th as they travel to face the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The start times are set for 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
