WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The Norwich University baseball team returned to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Sunday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to the University of Saint Joseph.
Game 1 – Saint Joseph 15, Norwich 0
The Blue Jays seized control early and never let up, scoring five runs in the second inning and adding on throughout the contest.
Norwich managed a pair of hits in the game, with
John O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) and
Domenic Swaine (Leominster, Mass.) each recording a base knock.
Out of the bullpen,
Peter Idleman (Mequon, Wis.) and
Blaine Butler (Copperas Cove, Texas) provided a bright spot, each delivering clean outings in relief.
Game 2 – Saint Joseph 8, Norwich 4
Saint Joseph carried its offensive momentum into the second game, building a five-run lead through four innings.
The Cadets responded in the fifth inning to get on the board.
Jon Ringer (Cupertino, Calif.) worked a leadoff walk and came around to score when
Alex DeTomasis (East Greenwich, R.I.) doubled. DeTomasis later advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from
Michael Davide Jr. (Franklin, Mass.) to cut into the deficit.
The Blue Jays answered with two runs in the bottom half, but Norwich continued to battle late.
In the eighth inning, O'Connor sparked the rally with a leadoff double, followed by a single from
Kyle Tanis (Shelburne, Vt.). Ringer delivered an RBI single to bring home O'Connor, and after Tanis stole third, he came around to score on a throwing error to trim the margin.
Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.) led the Cadets offensively with a 2-for-5 performance that included a double, while O'Connor, Tanis, and Ringer each contributed hits.
Norwich returns home Thursday, April 3, to host Colby-Sawyer for a GNAC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
