Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DOVER, Del. - The Norwich University baseball team travelled to Wesley College for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday.

The Wolverines swept the Cadets with a 10-3 win in game one and a () final in the second contest.

Wesley jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings before the Norwich bats came alive in the top of the fourth.

Sophomore Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) ledoff with a single to right field and one out later senior DH Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.) drew a walk. Lesco then advanced to third on a passed ball before freshman outfielder Oliver Brown (Waldoboro, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Lesco to score. After another Cadet out freshman second baseman Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) singled to left field to load the bases and sophomore catcher Chris Leach (Vergennes, Vt.) reached on an error that plated Pedley to make it 5-2.

The Wolverines plated three runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the sixth to stretch the lead to 10-2.

Norwich mounted a rally in the top of the seventh after senior outfielder LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) singled to right field with one out. Thomas then stole second base and came around to score on an RBI double by Lesco. That would prove to be the final run of the game for a 10-3 final score.

Senior Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) took the loss for the Cadets to fall to 0-1 on the campaign. He allowed five runs (all earned) on six hits and three walks over three innings of work. He stuck out four batters.

Freshman Casey Lemke (Winter Garden, Fla.) came on in relief and surrendered three runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks over two innings of work. He fanned two Wesley batters.

Sophomore Peter Madsen (New Boston, N.H.) threw one inning of relief as well, allowing two earned runs on two hits and one walk.

In game two the Wolverines struck early again with two runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 2-0 lead. The Cadets answered in the top of the third after Lesco drew a leadoff walk and Doherty delivered an RBI single to right field. Doherty was thrown out attempting to stretch the single into a double which allowed Lesco to cross home plate.

Norwich scored again in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Thomas that scored junior first baseman Eddie Gates (Griswold, Conn.). Leach was thrown out at home on the play attempting to tie the game, which ended the rally and made the game 3-2.

Wesley immediately answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to expand its lead to 7-2 but Norwich had another rally up its sleeve.

In the top of the fifth inning the Cadets were able to load the bases before Gates, freshman third baseman Brandon Profita (New Milford, Conn.) and fellow freshman outfielder CJ Davis (South Berwick, Maine) all drew walks. For Profita and Davis it was their first career RBI and it closed the game to 7-5 but that is as close as the Cadets would get.

The Wolverines added one run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth the make it an 8-5 game.

Senior Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.) was saddled with the loss for Norwich to fall to 0-1 after allowing six runs (all earned) on seven hits and three walks. He struck out five batters over four and one-third innings.

Freshman Daniel Bendig (Bellmore, N.Y.) tossed one and two-third innings and allowed two unearned runs on five hits. He fanned one batter.

Wesley improves to 3-0 on the season while Norwich falls to 0-4. The Cadets are next in action on Saturday, March 4th for a non-conference doubleheader at Bard College. Those games are set for 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
