NORTHFIELD, Vt. – For the second straight game, senior defender Noah Clemmer (Marlboro, N.Y.) provided the heroics, lifting the Norwich University men's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Lyndon State on Tuesday night at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
Clemmer scored the only goal of the game in the 69th minute for just the second goal of his collegiate career and both coming in the Cadets' last two games. Clemmer headed home a corner kick at the back post off a service from Carlos Guerra (Mission, Texas) to provide the game's only offense.
Senior goalkeeper Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) and the NU defense made it stand up from there as he made three saves and picked up his eighth shutout of the season, while extending his consecutive shutout minute streak to 660.
Norwich outshot Lyndon State 15-9. The shots were even at halftime 7-7. Matt LaClair made a couple of fantastic saves for the Hornets, turning aside seven shots in the loss.
Norwich extended its lead in the all-time series to 29-10-3 and beat the Hornets for the fourth straight time by a score of 1-0.
The Cadets also extended their unbeaten streak to seven straight with the victory. They are 6-0-1 in their last seven and upped their overall record to 10-4-3 on the year. Norwich has won 10 or more games now in 12 straight seasons.
NU begins its quest for its fifth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament title and first since 2008 on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts No. 7 seed Rivier on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium. With a victory, Norwich would also host a semifinal game on Tuesday.
