NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior captain Christian Albrecht (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored his second goal of the season to lift the Norwich University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Albertus Magnus on Saturday night on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
Albrecht headed home a corner kick service from freshman Ethan Melia (Shrewsburg, Mass.) in the 26th minute to provide the game's only offense. Freshman goalkeeper Stefan Skoff (San Jose, Calif.) made the goal stand up, making seven saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season.
With the victory, Norwich improved to 10-4-1 overall and continued to keep pace with Johnson & Wales at the top of the league standings with both teams sporting a 6-1 GNAC record. The win also marked the 10th straight season that Norwich has won at least 10 games under head coach Kyle Dezotell.
The Cadets also have clinched at least a top-four seed for the GNAC playoffs, guaranteeing them at least a home quarterfinal matchup. Norwich travels to face third place Mount Ida on Wednesday in a crucial showdown. The Mustangs have a 5-1-1 record and are just two points back of NU.
Norwich outshot Albertus Magnus 21-9. Skoff made two key saves early in the second half to keep the Falcons off the board. He stopped Jesse Plona and Ben Colter just minutes apart in the first six minutes of the half to keep Norwich out front 1-0.
Norwich improved to 11-8-1 all-time against Albertus Magnus with the victory.
