Box Score PAXTON, Mass. – Freshmen Mike
Hogervorst (Leiden, Netherlands) and Joe Bertrand
(Saugus, Mass.) scored a combined 22 points but it was not
enough as the Norwich University men's basketball team dropped an
82-60 decision to Anna Maria College in the Great Northeast
Athletic Conference matchup Tuesday night.
The loss drops the Cadets to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in league
action, while the AMCATS picked up their first GNAC victory of the
season to go 1-2 in the league and improve to 3-7 overall.
Betrand led the squad with 12 points, while Hogervorst added 10
as both players pulled down a pair of rebounds on the night. Junior
Alex
Preckol (Westford, Mass.), sophomore Kevin Ross
(Ontario, Calif.) and freshman Ryan
Fitzgerald (Winchester, Mass.) scored eight points
each for the Cadets.
Anna Maria jumped out to a 5-0 run before Hogervorst nailed a
shot from beyond the arc as the Cadets embarked a 5-2 run on a
three from Evan Tullar
(Chelsea, Vt.) and a layup from Ross to tie it up at eight
points apiece at the 16:22 mark.
The AMCATS took advantage of the Cadets' mistakes early on as a
Corey Pryor shot from downtown sparked a 16-4 run to take a
12-point lead with 8:52 still to play in the half. Norwich looked
to bounce back before the break but Anna Maria kept the Cadets off
the scoreboard and carried a 25-point lead into halftime,
41-26.
The second half saw little room of improvement for the Cadets as
Anna Maria led by as many as 33 points, with 7:54 left in the
stanza before the Cadets attempted a late rally with a 17-8 run but
it was not enough as clock struck zero as the AMCATS held on for
the 82-60 win.
Norwich struggled to find the basket, shooting 43.8 percent from
the floor (21-48) and hit just 5-of-11 (45.5 percent) from
three-point range.
Anna Maria held advantages in all five scoring categories,
scoring 40 points in the paint and 28 points off of Norwich's 21
turnovers throughout the game. The AMCATS hit 53.2 percent of its
shots from the field and 47.4 percent from beyond the
arc.
The Cadets are back in action on Thursday as they host Albertus
Magnus for a 7:00 p.m. GNAC matchup.
