Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team got goals from three different players, while senior goalie Loren Carrier (Chandler, Ariz.) stopped all eight shots she faced to lead the Cadets to a 3-0 victory over Saint Michael's College on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena in ECAC East action.
Senior Kaycie Anderson (Maple Plain, Minn.), along with freshmen Maki Shuchuk (Madison, Wis.) and Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) each tallied a goal to lead the Norwich offense on the day. Freshman Muranda Toews (Grand Prairie, Alberta) also notched two assists.
Norwich (11-3-2, 8-0-1 ECAC East) extended its league unbeaten streak to 25 straight games with the victory and improved its all-time record vs. Saint Michael's to 14-1-0.
After a scoreless first 10 minutes, Shuchuk got Norwich on the board with a goal off assists from Anderson and Toews at the 11:31 mark of the first period. The goal was Shuchuk's seventh of the season and first since Nov. 22.
Anderson found Shuchuk at the hashmarks and Shuchuk fired a shot that deflected off Saint Michael's goalie Tina Frasca's blocker. The puck just dribbled over the line before the Purple Knights could clear it away.
Anderson made it 2-0 at the 16:37 mark of the first period when she scored on a rebound off an initial shot by Toews. Anderson slipped the puck past Frasca before she could recover for her sixth goal of the season.
Norwich continued to put on the pressure in the second period, holding Saint Michael's without a shot on goal while also peppering Frasca for 12 shots. The Purple Knights' goalie stood tall though to keep Saint Michael's in the game trailing only 2-0 after 40 minutes.
The Cadets added one more insurance marker at the 13:54 mark of the third period with Schwenzfeier scoring her sixth of the season off an assist from rookie forward Nicole Goebel (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). Goebel fed a pass from the half boards to Schwenzfeier at the far circle and then she wristed a shot top shelf past Frasca to make it 3-0 Norwich and cap the scoring for the night.
Frasca made 37 saves for Saint Michael's. Carrier stopped all eight shots she faced to improve to 3-2-0 on the year.
Norwich was originally scheduled to face Nichols on Saturday at 4:40 p.m. but the game has been postponed due to impending weather in the Massachusetts area. No makeup date has been announced yet.
The Cadets will return to action next weekend when they host Plymouth State on Jan. 30 at 4 p.m. and then follow up with a big game against UMass Boston at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31.
