Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Norwich University men's soccer team battled Albertus Magnus to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Saturday afternoon in each team's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener.
Norwich (2-3-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when sophomore forward Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) found the back of the net on a cross by sophomore DJ Spears (San Antonio, Texas). Spears picked up his team-leading third assist.
Albertus Magnus answered in the 50th minute when Alexis Garcia headed home a free-kick service by Alex Zapata to knot the match up at 1-1. Garcia's goal broke Norwich's impressive consecutive shutout minutes streak against the Falcons at 461:21 straight minutes.
Albertus Magnus outshot Norwich 32-10 in the match. Senior goalkeeper Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.) made 10 saves for the Cadets in goal. Albertus Magnus' Griffin Volta made four saves for the Falcons in goal. Norwich leads the all-time series 10-8-3 against Albertus Magnus.
Norwich returns home to Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium to host Pine Manor on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. in non-conference action. The Cadets also host Suffolk at 5 p.m. on Saturday as part of Norwich Homecoming Weekend 2014.
