POULTNEY, Vt. – The Norwich University women's volleyball team were led by an impressive 12 kills from senior outside hitter Alex Palmer (South Windsor, Conn.) en route to a 3-0 sweep of Green Mountain College in non-conference volleyball action on Wednesday evening at the Eagle Dome.
Norwich (3-4) converted the attack at a .167 clip thanks in large part to Palmer's great efficiency (.476) at the net to earn the 25-11, 25-15, 25-12 victory.
Green Mountain (0-5) trailed early in the first two matches and could never string together any significant runs mostly due to a strong Norwich defense which dug up 52 attacks on the night. The Eagles briefly held a slight advantage in the third set, but were ultimately overmatched against the Norwich attack.
Complementing the offense for the Cadets was junior middle hitter Tara Lyons (Pocasset, Mass.) and senior right side hitter Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) who both contributed five kills. Leading the defense for the visitors was sophomore libero Alex Ruediger (Sandy Lake, Pa.) who tied a match-high with 12 digs followed by Baita and junior outside hitter Angie Hershberger (Felton, Calif.) who both had 10 digs. Freshman setter Katherine Crane (Avon, N.Y.) steered the offense tallying a game-high 23 assists.
Green Mountain received a team-high five kills from junior outside hitter Hayley Provost while sophomore libero Celeste Bowers led the backline with 12 digs.
Green Mountain will host a non-conference quad-match this Saturday and play host to SUNY Cobleskill and the University of Maine at Presque-Isle. The first match against the Fighting Tigers will commence at 10:00 a.m. and then the match versus UMPI has the first serve scheduled for 6 p.m. Norwich will play again next Wednesday when it travels to take on St. Michael's at 6 p.m.
