Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Norwich University men's soccer team fell 4-0 to Middlebury College on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.
Middlebury sophomore Adam Glaser scored twice and added an assist as the Panthers (1-0-1) earned their first victory of 2014 after tying Amherst in their season opener last weekend.
Middlebury possessed a 22-2 advantage in shots, jumped on the scoreboard early with a goal 13:43 into play. Glaser and teammate Luis Echeverria connected on a nifty give-and-go just outside the penalty box. Glaser sent a through ball to the foot of Echeverria, who in turn sent a hard shot to the left side of the goal that Norwich senior goalkeeper Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.) got a hand on but couldn't keep out.
Just over 11 minutes later, Middlebury increased the lead to 2-0 following a throw-in from the right side. Tim Ogle hurled a long throw into the penalty area that found Deklan Robinson, who headed it into the back of the net.
Norwich's best chance to score came in the 40th minute. Senior defender Derek Morin (South Paris, Maine) sent a cross from 40 yards out that Middlebury goalie Greg Sydor grabbed before a host of Cadets could direct it toward the goal.
The score remained 2-0 in favor of the hosts until the 60th minute. Middlebury's Kirk Horton sent a ball in the air from 30 yards out that found a streaking Glaser down the right side. Glaser sent a one-touch into the top-left corner for his first of the year. Just over six minutes later, Glaser tacked on an unassisted tally on a scramble in front of the goal, making the final score 4-0.
Sydor finished with a pair of saves in goal for the Panthers, while Hallstrom gathered seven saves in 75:42 of action for Norwich. Sophomore Kevin Taylor (Natick, Mass.) played the final 14:18 for the Cadets.
Norwich (2-3) will look to get back on track when it opens up its 2014 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season schedule on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. when it travels to Albertus Magnus.
