Box Score 2 WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Despite another outstanding performance from junior pitcher Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) on the mound in Game 1, the Norwich University softball team was swept by the Univ. of St. Joseph (Conn.) for the second straight season on Wednesday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader.
Baita went 8.1 innings allowing just four hits and one run while striking out eight and walking none. However, she was the tough luck loser as the NU offense failed to score and the Blue Jays won 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth once the international tie-breaker rule was enforced.
USJ first baseman Emily Vigue laced a RBI single to score the runner from third base to score Game 1's only run and give the Blue Jays the victory in walk off fashion, spoiling Baita's terrific effort.
Norwich managed just three hits in Game 1 off USJ ace Patti Sciglimpaglia with Baita, Kelly Travers (Whitman, Mass.) and Justina George (Wallingford, Conn.) all collecting hits.
In Game 2, it was all USJ as the Blue Jays (11-8, 7-3 GNAC) pounded out 12 hits off NU senior pitcher Kaylie Miller (Long Lake, N.Y.) en route to a 7-1 victory over the Cadets.
Norwich (11-9, 6-4 GNAC) once again struggled at the plate, collecting just four hits off USJ's Danielle Circosta. Senior shortstop Abby Belcher (Winthrop, Mass.) provided the only offense with a solo home run for her fourth round-tripper of the season.
Circosta went the distance striking out nine and walking two to pick up the victory. Miller was saddled with the loss after allowing six earned runs.
Norwich will look to break its four-game skid tomorrow when it takes on Albertus Magnus in another GNAC doubleheader at a neutral site in Rivier University.
