NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Softball team hosted its final twin bill of the 2025 campaign Friday afternoon when they took on Lasell, where the two Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) adversaries split the two games.
The Cadets were off and running in game one, scoring runs in the first two innings.
Hailey Williams (Tamaqua, Pa.) led things off with a ground-rule double down the left field line. After a single by
Adelette Gutierrez (Cameron, N.C.) put runners on the corners,
Madison DeCota (Strafford, N.H.) drove in Williams on a groundout. In the second,
Courtney Thomas (Strafford, N.H.) led off with a double before coming home on a
Kennedy White (Randolph Center, Vt.).
Lasell cut the Norwich lead in half with a run in the third, but the Cadets responded with two runs in the fourth. White started the frame with a free pass before coming home on an error, allowing
Brianna Vitale (Rock Tavern, N.Y.) to reach base. As the lineup turned over, Williams doubled in Vitale to make it a three-run game.
The Lasers cut the lead to one in the seventh, but were held there, preserving the win. It was another stellar pitching performance by DeCota, who allowed one earned run in a complete game victory while striking out six. Vitale (2-3, Run) and Williams (2-4, Run, 2 Doubles) led the way offensively.
After the senior day ceremonies between games, where
Kennedy White,
Rachel Kempf (Warwick, R.I.), and
Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) were honored as part of the 2024-25 graduating class, Norwich got on the board early in game two. With runners on first and second with one down,
Emily Munson (Angleton, Texas) drove home DeCota and McGinn, giving Norwich an early lead.
Both DeCota and Abigail Fortin kept the other offenses at bay until the Cadets added to their lead in the fifth with Munson bringing home DeCota on a sacrifice fly. However, the Lasers answered with two in the sixth to shrink the deficit to one before taking the lead in the seventh with three runs. With two outs, Norwich attempted to mount a rally, closing the gap to one with Thomas bringing home
Sage Kontny (Clancy, Mont.), but Lasell stifled the rally to earn the victory. Offensively, Norwich had several players record multiple hits, including Williams (2-4), DeCota (2-4, 2 Runs), Munson (2-2, 2 RBI, Double), and Thomas (2-3, RBI).
The Cadets will round out their regular season with a doubleheader at Rivier on April 27 at 12 PM.
