Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – The Norwich University baseball team had its season come to an end in the first round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball tournament in a 4-0 loss to Lasell College.
The Lasers struck first in the bottom of the second inning on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Brandon Valentin to make it 1-0.
Dan Gagnon added a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored Valentin and Bobby Ellard to make it 3-0.
Billy Uberti grounded out to shortstop to plate Gagnon from third and extend the lead to 4-0.
The best offensive threat for the Cadets came in the top of the eighth after junior Brandon Place (Concord, N.H.) hit a leadoff single. Freshman Tim Haggerty (Medfield, Mass.) then reached on an error and senior Charles Schaub (East Hampton, Conn.) hit a bunt single to load the bases.
Freshman LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) then grounded into a fielder's choice that cut down Place at home plate and senior Sean Gerich (Chicago, Ill.) grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.
Ryan Bown picked up the win for the Lasers to improve to 4-2 on the season after thowing all nine innings. He surrendered only five hits and one walk while striking out four batters.
Sophomore Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) took the loss for the Cadets to fall to 2-4. He pitched seven and two-thirds innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits and six walks. He struck out seven batters.
Norwich was led offensively by Schaub and sophomore Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) who tallied two hits apiece.
Lasell moves on to face St. Joseph's College (Maine) in the semifinals this weekend with the victory.
Norwich is next in action on Monday April 28th when they travel to Plattsburgh State for a make-up contest.
