Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team was swept by Albertus Magnus College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at Garrity Field on Saturday.
The Falcons won game one 8-2 and took the second contest 7-4 in the first true home games of the season for the Cadets.
In game one Norwich jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after freshman Tim Haggerty (Medfield, Mass.) reached on an error that allowed sophomore Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) to score from third base.
The Cadets added to their lead in the bottom of the third on a Whaley RBI single that plated freshman LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) from third to make it 2-0.
The Falcons cut the Cadet lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth on a Jordan Kubilus RBI single, and then took the lead on a bases-loaded double by Mike Saia that plated three runs and made it 4-2.
Albertus tagged on four more runs in the top of the seventh inning on a Zack Sokolis RBI double, a Kubilus RBI fielder's choice and RBI singles by Saia and Justin Poirier to extend the lead to 8-2.
The Norwich bats couldn't solve pitcher Mike Barillaro, who tossed all seven innings and improved to 3-2 with the win. He allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits. He struck out 10 batters.
Sophomore Jacob Muetterties (Boxford, Mass.) took the loss to fall to 1-4 on the season. He surrendered four earned runs on six hits and one walk in four and one-third innings of work. He struck out three.
Sophmore Kevin Gadowski (Chandler, Ari.) came on in relief and allowed four earned runs on six hits also, in two and two-thirds innings. He struck out one batter.
Thomas had another solid game at the plate registering three hits, one run scored and two stolen bases, while Whaley added two hits and senior Sean Gerich (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in with two hits as well.
In game two the Cadets scored first as well, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a Whaley two-RBI single that scored sophomore Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) and Gerich.
The Falcons responded in the top of the third on back-to-back RBI doubles by Nick Seida and Patrick Dornfried to tie the game 2-2.
Anthony Pellegrino and Jack Pritchard added RBI singles in the inning to give Albertus a 4-2 lead.
Norwich got one run back on a Gerich sacrifice fly that scored Thomas in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2, and then tied the game on an RBI fielder's choice by senior Charles Schaub (East Hampton, Conn.) that scored freshman Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.).
The Falcons took the lead for good on a two-run, opposite field homer ripped by Pritchard in the top of the fifth inning.
Saia added an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning to give Albertus another insurance run at 7-4.
Thomas ripped a two-out double in the home half of the seventh, but the Cadets were unable to continue the rally.
Brian Levchuk tossed a complete game for the Falcons, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and one walk. He struck out six batters and improves to 2-3.
Junior Brandon Place (Concord, N.H.) took the loss for the Cadets allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks in five innings of work. He struck out five batters and falls to 1-3.
With the losses, Norwich falls to 7-15 overall and 4-11 in the GNAC, while Albertus improves to 14-13 overall and 7-7 in GNAC play.
The Cadets are next in action in the first round of the GNAC playoff as they travel to take on the third-seeded Lasell College on Tuesday, April 22. It is a single elimination contest with first pitch slated to for 7 p.m.
