Box Score 2 NASHUA, N.H. - The Norwich University baseball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Rivier University Sunday afternoon.
In game one the Raiders rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk-off with a 3-2 win over the Cadets, in the second contest Norwich was plated four runs in the top of the 12th inning en route to a 6-3 win in extra innings.
Game one was scoreless heading into the top of the sixth inning until sophomore Cody Lindell (Cranston, R.I.) hit an RBI single that scored sophomore Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) to make it 1-0 Norwich.
The Cadets added a run in the top of the seventh inning as senior Sean Gerich (Chicago, Ill.) scored on a passed ball to push the score to 2-0.
The Raiders loaded the bases with only one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, setting the stage for a dramatic rally.
Marc Medeiros hit a sacrifice fly to make it a one run game at 2-1. A walk later the bases were full again and Taylor Black reached on an error that allowed two runs to score and end the contest giving the Raiders their first GNAC win of the season, 3-2.
Gerich finished the game with two hits and sophomore Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) was perfect on the game with three hits and a walk to lead the Cadets offensively.
Jon Chotkowski picked up the win to improve to 1-2 after throwing a complete game eight-hitter, allowing two runs (one earned) and one walk while striking out three.
Whaley was hit with the loss for the Cadets to fall to 1-3 as he tossed six and two-thirds innings, surrendering three runs (none earned) on just six hits and two walks while striking out two.
In game two the Cadets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Baker sacrifice fly that scored freshman LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas).
In the top of the third Gerich added to his stellar day at the plate with an RBI single that plated senior Charles Schaub (East Hampton, Conn.) and stretched the Cadet lead to 2-0.
Rivier plated a run in the bottom of the sixth and another in the seventh to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
Norwich broke open the game with four runs in the top of the 12th inning as Lindell and freshman Kyle Lamorey (Northfield, Vt.) chipped in with RBI singles and freshman Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) connected on a two-RBI single to cap the scoring.
The Raiders got one run back in the bottom of the inning, but that was all they could muster as the Cadets took the game 6-3.
Junior Brandon Place (Concord, N.H.) started on the mound for Norwich and pitched six innings of five-hit baseball, allowing two earned runs while striking out three.
Baker then came on to pitch for the remainder of the contest, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks. He struck out five and picked up the win to improve to 1-0 on the season.
Alex Mears took the loss for Rivier after throwing four innings of relief where he allowed four earned runs on four hits and two walks.
Norwich improves to 6-11 overall and 4-7 in the GNAC with the split while Rivier stands at 2-22 overall and 1-9 in GNAC play.
The Cadets are next in action on Tuesday April 15th when they host Daniel Webster for a non-conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
