Men's Hockey: Saint Anselm stymies Norwich 2-1

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Brendon Kerrigan (Boston, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal and junior Joey Agliato (Hauppage, N.Y.) scored the game winner to lift the Saint Anselm college men's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over No. 5 nationally-ranked Norwich University on Saturday afternoon for ECAC Men's East ice hockey action.

The Hawks jump to 7-9-4 on the season, including 4-7-4 in ECAC East play, while the Cadets dip to 14-5-2, 10-3-1 ECAC East.

Norwich jumped on the board at 12:11 of the first period when Paul Russell ripped a shot from the middle of the slot under the glove of Saint Anselm goaltender Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich.) after he received a pass from Cody Smith at the left post. Corey Hale was also assisting on the power-play goal.

It was Kerrigan, though, who gained the equalizer for Saint Anselm with just 1:22 left in the second as he picked up the puck from senior Kevin Vanous (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sent a wrister from the bottom of the left circle into the back of the net. Junior Kody Grondin (Hampton, N.H.) initiated the sequence as he cleared the Hawk zone and passed the puck up to Vanous at the blue line.

Agliato came with the game-winning goal at 10:49 of the third when he picked up a Norwich turnover in its own zone and sent a wrist shot at the net that ricocheted off the glove of Norwich goaltender Chris Czarnota and over his right shoulder.

Dries stopped a career-high 47 shots, which broke his previous record of 45 he made earlier this season at Norwich on Nov. 22. Czarnota made 23 saves in the loss. Norwich held a 48-25 edge in shots on goal.

Seniors Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.), Greg Crovo (Melrose, Mass.), Joe Tebano (Glastonbury, Conn.), Greg Merrill (Brighton, Mich.), Alex Pascal (Blue Bell, Pa.), Eric Czapka (Holland, Pa.), Vanous and Dries were honored in a ceremony prior to the start of the game.

This weekend marked the first time Norwich (14-5-2, 10-3-1 ECAC East) was swept on a weekend since 2006-07 when the Cadets lost to Amherst and Hamilton by scores of 5-4 each night.

The Cadets will look to rebound next weekend when they face Castleton and Skidmore on the road on Friday and Saturday respectively.
