NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's soccer team stretched its winning streak to six straight with a 3-1 victory over Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
Norwich (8-3-1, 3-0-1 GNAC) got a goal and an assist from sophomore forward Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) and freshman midfielder Colin Lozito (Wilmington, Vt.) to lead the offense on the day.
Norwich scored all three of its goals in a span of 8:12 early in the first half as it maintained first place in the GNAC standings with 10 points.
Zimmerman opened the scoring in the ninth minute when he beat Anna Maria goalkeeper Elliot Kuzma to the left side of the net to make it 1-0 Norwich. Lozito notched the assist on the goal, playing a perfect through ball to space that Zimmerman ran down near the top of the 18, took a couple of touches and calmly beat Kuzma for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Lozito made it 2-0 in the 14th minute by scoring his first collegiate goal off a gorgeous combo setup from freshman Greg Zydanowicz (Newington, Conn.) and Zimmerman. Zydanowicz played a ball from the left wing that Zimmerman flicked forward with his back turned to the goal. Lozito was in alone after that and he buried the ball into the left corner of the net.
Sophomore midfielder Moab Schiers (South Weber, Utah) capped the Cadets' three-goal surge in the 17th minute with an unassisted goal for his fifth of the season. Schiers stepped around a defender near the top of the 18 and then fired a shot with his left foot that beat Kuzma to make it 3-0 Norwich.
Anna Maria (2-9-0, 1-3-0 GNAC) broke up Norwich's shutout bid in the 82nd minute when Gregory Cory scored on a long set piece from nearly midfield. Cory struck a ball that Hallstrom didn't see until late and his last second diving effort wasn't enough to push the ball wide as it bounced off the right post and into the back of the net.
Hallstrom made three saves to pick up his eighth win of the season. Kuzma made six saves for Anna Maria to fall to 1-3-0 on the year.
Norwich outshot Anna Maria 18-14.
The Cadets return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Lyndon State to take on the Hornets at 3:30 p.m. in their final non-conference tilt of the season.
