Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Norwich University men's soccer team battled Johnson & Wales University to a 1-1 double overtime tie in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest in front of a standing room only crowd at Scotts Miracle-Gro Outdoor Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. The tie marks the second straight time the two teams have ended in a draw after tying in the GNAC Quarterfinals last season.
Johnson & Wales (7-0-2, 1-0-2 GNAC) carried the play in the first half and got on the board after Norwich was whistled for a foul. On the indirect free kick, junior O'Kyle Corridon (Selden, N.Y.) touched a pass to freshman Xavier Carty (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) who blasted in a shot to the right corner of the net to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead at the 13:03 mark. Both sides had solid chances the remainder but neither could capitalize as JWU took the one goal lead heading into halftime.
Norwich (5-2-2, 1-1-1 GNAC) knotted the game at 1-1 in the 54th minute after junior Chris Bristol (Clinton, Conn.) headed in a crossing pass from freshman Moab Schiers (South Weber, Utah). The two teams then battled back and forth for the remainder of the stanza with regulation ending in a 1-1 tie.
In the first overtime period, Norwich was called for a foul just outside of the box. The Wildcats couldn't capitalize on the free kick, however and the contest remained tied. Neither squad could muster much offense in the second overtime period as the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.
JWU junior keeper Ryan Dzierzawski (Oakland, Mich.) had nine saves for the Wildcats while junior Greg Payne (State College, Pa.) tallied seven stops for Norwich.
The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, October 2nd when they travel to Becker for a non-conference contest at 4:00 p.m. Norwich continues its three-game road trip when it travels to Plymouth State on Tuesday to take on the Panthers at 5 p.m. in a non-conference matchup. The Cadets return home on Friday, Oct. 4 when it hosts Emmanuel at 7 p.m. to kickoff Norwich University Homecoming Weekend 2013.
