Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt.—Junior outside hitter Alex Palmer (South Windsor, Conn.) recorded a game-high 12 kills to lead the Norwich University volleyball team to its first win of the season, a 3-0 decision against Green Mountain College on Wednesday night in Andrews Hall.
With the win, the Cadets improve to 1-5 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 1-5.
Both Palmer and Tara Lyons (Pocasett, Mass.) totaled four kills in the first game to lead the Cadets to the 25-17 final to take the early 1-0 lead. Norwich won the second game by a score of 25-11, powered by eight team service aces and a team-high of three by sophomore Angie Hershberger (Felton, Calif.).
The third game was the tightest, as Green Mountain held a 21-18 advantage until Palmer served three-straight points to give the Cadets a slight 22-21 lead. A ball-handling error by Hershberger brought the score to 22-22, but a Green Mountain serving error and two-straight attack errors clinched the 25-22 win for Norwich.
In addition to Palmer's 12 kills, the Cadets saw six kills from Lyons and four kills from Hershberger. Junior setter Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) dished out 18 assists for the team, while Hershberger and senior Jennette Chartrand (Poestenkill, N.Y.) led the defense with six digs apiece. Hershberger also added five service aces on the evening, while Baita chipped in with four.
Green Mountain was led offensively by senior Kara Egan (Breezy Point, N.Y.) with eight kills. She also led the Eagles' defensive efforts with seven digs. Classmate Jennifer Seredejko (Greenfield, Mass.) dished out nine assists for Green Mountain. Five different members of the Eagles' squad recorded service aces.
Norwich totaled a game attack percentage of .179 on 26 kills and 16 errors, including a match-high .444 attack percentage in the second game. The Cadets held the Eagles to negative hitting, as the team totaled 11 kills and 15 errors.
The Cadets return to action this weekend when they travel to Plattsburgh State for the Best Western Cardinal Classic Tournament. Norwich will play the hosts at 4:15 p.m. on Friday and will take on Plymouth State at 8:15 p.m.
