NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior forward Tori Charron (Tecumseh, Ontario) scored four goals to lead the Norwich University women's ice hockey team to a 9-0 win over St. Michael's in its Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East opener on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena.
Sophomore defenseman Madison Gallagher (Kirkland, Quebec) tallied a career-high three assists as well for Norwich (2-1-0, 1-0-0 ECAC East) as the Cadets improved to 53-2-3 in its last 58 league games. Freshman forward Shalyn Pavlisko (Oshawa, Ontario) and junior forward Rachel Bellio (Denver, Colo.) also scored their first career goals at Norwich.
Charron opened the scoring exactly eight minutes into the first period when she took a shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle that fluttered over St. Michael's starting goalie Tona Frasca's right shoulder and into the back of the net off assists from Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.) and Bellio.
Bellio notched her first as a Cadet at the 18:41 mark of the first on the power play when she slapped home a shot while crossing through the slot off a pass from senior defenseman Marie-Philip Guay (Longueuil, Quebec). Senior defenseman Kayla Parsons (Fairbanks, Alaska) also had an assist as well.
Charron made it 3-0 Norwich just 2:04 into the second period on the power play when she scored off a rebound on the backdoor after Frasca made an initial save on Gallagher's shot from the point.
Pavlisko scored her first collegiate goal by flipping home a rebound in front of the net with Frasca sprawled out on the ice after a scrum in front of the net. Adelle Murphy (Roseau, Minn.) picked up the assist.
Sophomore forward Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y.) scored a pretty goal on a breakaway going by bar down over the left shoulder of Frasca to make it 5-0 just 4:15 into the second to chase the Purple Knights' starter from the game. Kahnekaro:roks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) picked up her first career assist on the goal, as well as Gallagher.
Senior defenseman Liz Gemmiti (Woodbridge, Ontario) pushed the lead to 6-0 at the 6:34 mark with another rebound goal off an assist from Haley Gibson (Richmond, Ontario).
Charron added two more goals, while Guay notched her first of the season to round out the Norwich scoring. Charron now has six goals on the season through three games and has tallied a remarkable 82 goals in 82 career games played.
Junior goalie Loren Carrier (Chandler, Ariz.) stopped all 11 shots she faced to pick up her first victory of the season.
Norwich outshot St. Michael's 40-11 and improved to 12-1-0 in the all-time series with the Purple Knights.
The Cadets return to action tomorrow when they travel up I-89 to complete their home and home series with St. Michael's. Puck drop is set for 1 p.m. at the Douglas Cairns Arena in South Burlington, Vt.
