Men's Soccer: Zimmerman's pair powers Norwich past Colby-Sawyer 2-0

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Freshman striker Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) continued his impressive rookie season, netting both of the Norwich University men's soccer team's goals in a 2-0 win over Colby-Sawyer College in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Tournament Quarterfinals.

Zimmerman scored in the 32nd and 46th minute for his eighth and ninth goals of the season to regain the team lead after coming into the match tied with fellow rookie Alec Brigante (Colchester, Vt.).

Zimmerman gave Norwich (12-4-4) the only lead it would need in the 32nd minute when he took a pass from freshman midfielder Kyle Spillane (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Zimmerman collected the pass and drilled a low shot to the far right post with his left foot that beat Colby-Sawyer starting goalkeeper Nick Austin to make it 1-0 Cadets.

Zimmerman struck again just 34 seconds into the second half when he dribbled 35 yards all along down the right wing off a pass from Andy Dustin (Canterbury, N.H.) to a 2-on-1 with Ryan Curley (East Haddam, Conn.). He took a couple of dibbles inside the 18 and then fired another low hard shot to the far post that banked off the post and into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Norwich.

Norwich outshot Colby-Sawyer 25-9 and totaled five corner kicks to the Chargers' four. Junior goalkeeper Greg Payne (State College, Pa.) picked up the victory and his third shutout of the season, turning aside the only shot he faced to improve to 7-2-1 on the year.

Norwich advances to the ECAC New England Tournament Semifinals now where it will meet No. 1-seeded Springfield College at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16. Lasell meets Worcester State in the other semifinal with the winners meeting in the championship on Sunday.

Norwich won the ECAC New England Tournament in 2007 and last advanced to the semifinal round in 2011, where it lost to Brandeis.
