NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior forward Anthony Amell (Northfield, Vt.) scored in the eighth minute to lift the Norwich University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win on Wednesday night in non-conference action at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.

Norwich (7-3-2, 2-1-1 GNAC) extended its perfect home record to 6-0 since moving to its new facility at the start of this season.

Amell finished off a textbook buildup with his second goal of the season by beating Lyndon State junior goalkeeper Jason Marks to the left side of the net. Freshman midfielder Moab Schiers (South Weber, Utah) started the chance by sending a crossing pass over Derek Morin (South Paris, Maine) on the right wing. Morin settled the ball and quickly fired a centering pass back to the middle of the field to find Amell's feet and then the lanky senior striker took care of the rest.

Amell was a threat all night long with a team-leading eight shots. He nearly scored just three minutes into the match but a Lyndon State defender kicked a ball out of the way for a team save after Marks was off his line.

Norwich had two goals called back late in the first half with Chris Bristol (Clinton, Conn.) being nullified by a foul being called just prior to him blasting a shot into the right corner of the net from the near the penalty stripe.

A little under five minutes later, Alec Brigante (Colchester, Vt.) headed the ball into the net but it was called back after Norwich was whistled for being offside.

Norwich outshot Lyndon State 25-7. Freshman forward Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) also tallied five shots on net for the Cadets as they peppered Marks and the Hornet defense all night long.

Marks made 12 saves in the loss for Lyndon State (0-11-1, 0-5-1 GNAC), while junior keeper Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.) made one save to pick up his second win of the season and his second shutout. Norwich as a team has seven shutouts on the season with tonight being its first since Sept. 16 in a 1-0 win over Eastern Nazarene.

Norwich hits the road to take on Suffolk on Saturday in another GNAC matchup with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.

NU then returns home for its final two home games of the regular season when it hosts conference-leading Lasell on Monday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. and then Rivier on Friday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m.
